OrthoLuma wins global innovation award at 2025 ISTA Shark Tank in Rome
September 2025
OrthoLuma™ has taken first place at the prestigious International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA) 2025 Shark Tank competition in Rome, Italy.
The winning innovation, LumaScan™, is a fast, contactless surface registration system that uses AI-driven optical sensing to enable next-generation accuracy in robotic joint replacement surgery. By replacing traditional manual or probe-based bone registration with intelligent optical scanning, LumaScan™ enhances surgical precision, efficiency, and consistency. This is a critical leap forward in the evolution of robotic arthroplasty.
“High-accuracy registration isn’t guesswork; it’s a geometric handshake between surfaces,” said Brett Robertson, Co-Founder of OrthoLuma.
The ISTA Shark Tank is an annual global innovation showcase that spotlights breakthrough technologies shaping the future of joint replacement. Competing teams are selected from around the world to pitch their concepts to a panel of leading surgeons, engineers, and MedTech investors.
“This recognition so soon after our launch is an extraordinary milestone for OrthoLuma” Robertson added. “It validates our vision for intelligent, contactless systems that make robotic surgery faster, safer, and more accessible to surgeons and patients worldwide.”
The OrthoLuma team will now continue developing LumaScan™ for integration into future robotic platforms and clinical validation programs, further strengthening Australia’s position as a leader in next-generation surgical innovation.
